Non-competitive: 

Candidates must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited law school.

Duties

Legal Research

Assist attorneys with legal research involving the Abandoned Property Law, Banking Law, Estates, Powers and Trusts Law, the Surrogates Court Procedure Act, Domestic Relations Law, and Mental Hygiene Law, among others, as such laws relate to abandoned property claims and abandoned property reporting.

Legal Writing/Analysis

Draft legal memoranda, review abandoned property claims, and prepare letters to abandoned property claimants for review by attorneys.

Motion Review

Review motion papers in connection with abandoned property claims for funds representing court deposits and turnover orders. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in Lexis Nexis/Westlaw legal research
  • Advanced legal writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills to manage varied workload in a timely fashion
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to digest and analyze novel questions of law

Telecommuting

The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
