Purpose of Review

The purpose of our review was to assess the Hunter-Tannersville Central School District’s (District’s) progress, as of June 2025, in implementing our recommendations in the audit report Hunter- Tannersville Central School District – Network User Accounts and Information Technology Contingency Planning (2022M-125), released in November 2022.

The audit determined that District officials did not adequately manage or monitor non-student network user accounts or develop a written IT contingency plan. As a result, the District’s risk of unauthorized network access was increased, and it risked losing important data and suffering a serious interruption to operations that depended on its computerized environment. The audit included five recommendations to help District officials manage and monitor non-student network user accounts and develop a written IT contingency plan.

Background

The District serves the Towns of Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington and Prattsville in Greene County. The District is governed by an elected five-member Board of Education (Board), responsible for managing and controlling financial and educational affairs. The Superintendent of Schools (Superintendent) is appointed by the Board and is chief executive officer responsible for day-to-day management, under the Board’s direction. The District’s Director of Technology is responsible for managing and monitoring the District’s IT operations including non-student network user accounts and IT contingency planning, and reports to the Superintendent.

Results of Review

Of the five recommendations contained in the audit report, we determined that the District’s Director of Technology, Board and officials fully implemented all five recommendations. We also reviewed progress in implementing the recommendations related to the sensitive IT control weaknesses that we reported to officials confidentially, and communicated those results confidentially to District officials.
