DiNapoli: State Could Face Tough Fiscal Decisions in Year Ahead

The State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2017-18 Enacted Budget increases funding for education, clean water, affordable housing and other programs, but authorizes more than $10.5 billion in new state debt and allows billions of dollars in lump sum spending with minimal disclosure, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

DiNapoli: Bombay Clerk Sentenced for Pocketing Justice Court Fees

A North Country court clerk was sentenced yesterday for stealing more than $5,680 from Bombay Justice Court while the other court clerk – his mother – was on sick leave, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Eric Fleury, 44, was sentenced in Dickinson Town Court to three years’ probation and ordered to pay full restitution after his February 1 guilty plea to official misconduct. The thefts were uncovered by DiNapoli’s audit and investigation of the court’s financial operations.

DiNapoli: Safeway Supermarkets Commit to Sustainable Palm Oil

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced that Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) — the second largest grocery chain in the U.S. — has agreed to give preference to suppliers of 100% verified sustainable palm oil and set a goal of using only sustainable palm oil in all of its Safeway-brand products.  As a result of the company’s new policy, the New York State Common Retirement Fund (the Fund) has withdrawn its sustainable palm oil shareholder proposal.

DiNapoli: Financial Records of 500 Public Authorities Now on www.openbooknewyork.com

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced that financial information for more than 500 state and local public authorities is now available at Open Book New York http://www.openbooknewyork.com/, a transparency website launched by DiNapoli in 2008. The database, going back to 2007, can be downloaded in an Excel, tsv or csv format.
