Comptroller DiNapoli and A.G. Schneiderman Announce Charges Against Georgia Resident for Stealing Over $200K in NYS Pension Benefits

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the unsealing of a one-count indictment charging Richard L. Cook III, 57, a resident of Atlanta, Ga., with the crime of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class C felony, in Albany County Court. Cook is charged with stealing over $200,000 in pension payments from the New York State and Local Employees Retirement System paid to his deceased mother, Yvonne Powell, a New York State pensioner who died in 2009.

DiNapoli: Former Riverside Village Clerk Sentenced to Jail for $50K Theft

Former Riverside clerk-treasurer Kristina Johnson was sentenced to jail time for repeatedly stealing village funds to cover her household expenses, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today. Johnson was sentenced to 60 days in jail, five years probation and ordered to pay full restitution of $50,000 to the village.

“Too many public servants confuse the public purse with their own,” DiNapoli said. “Thanks to my partnership with District Attorney Brooks Baker, Ms. Johnson is going to jail and will repay taxpayers.”

DiNapoli Releases Upper Manhattan Economic Snapshot

The number of jobs, businesses and people living in Washington Heights and Inwood have reached record levels, but low household incomes and a shortage of affordable housing are challenges, according to an economic snapshot released today by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The report is part of a series by DiNapoli examining economic issues across the five boroughs.

DiNapoli Releases December State Cash Report

Total receipts through the first three quarters of state fiscal year 2015-16 totaled approximately $111.9 billion, $230.6 million higher than the Division of the Budget’s (DOB) latest projections, according to the monthly state cash report issued today by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Total spending of $104.9 billion over the period was $1 billion below initial projections.

Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Attorney General Eric T. DiNapoli: Audits Find $70 Million in Dubious Claims, Persistent Medicaid Billing System Failures

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today released two audits revealing more than $70 million in questionable Medicaid claims and payments. DiNapoli’s auditors found the state reimbursed providers for excessive services, including 41 dental exams for one patient over three years and identified about a dozen providers that should have been kicked out of the system for wrongdoing.

DiNapoli: Fewer Counties Exceeding Tax Cap

The number of counties overriding New York’s property tax cap has declined by more than half over the past four fiscal years, dropping from 15 in 2012 to only six in 2015, according to a report issued today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The report also noted that the counties’ average tax levy increase has remained at or below 2 percent in each of the past four years.
