Former Wallkill Fire District board chair Michael Denardo was sentenced today in Ulster County Court for stealing nearly $240,000 from the district, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced.
“This was a shameful crime of someone sworn to protect the public,” DiNapoli said. “It is also a warning to fire district officials throughout New York: Always safeguard your assets with checks and balances. I thank District Attorney Carnright for bringing Mr. Denardo to justice and helping us recoup the stolen funds.”

ALBANY – New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the sentencing of Terence Fitzpatrick, 53, of Monmouth County, N.J., following his guilty plea in November 2015 to the crime of Attempted Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class D felony, in Albany County Court. Fitzpatrick was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation.
The state Department of Health (DOH) did not collect an estimated $95.1 million in rebates from drug makers, according to an audit released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. As a result of the findings, DOH invoiced $9.3 million of rebates by the end of the audit’s fieldwork and changed policies that would allow for the collection of additional rebates.

Schneiderman today announced the felony conviction and sentence of Herbert Friedman, former Chief Financial Officer of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council). Herbert Friedman, together with other co-conspirators, stole approximately $9 million from the taxpayer-funded nonprofit organization in a 20-year grand larceny and kickback scheme.
New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today that his office has identified more than $5 million in unclaimed funds for local governments across the state. After reaching out and alerting officials from counties, cities, towns and villages of this lost money, DiNapoli’s office has returned more than $1.5 million so far. DiNapoli’s office oversees the state’s 31 million unclaimed funds accounts, valued at more than $13 billion.
