"New York is facing great opportunities and challenges in the year ahead. The Governor has put forth an ambitious agenda to move our state forward, while renewing his commitment to hold the line on spending.

"The state is in a stronger fiscal position than it has been for some time, and the Governor and Legislature deserve credit for reducing the structural budget imbalance and passing on-time budgets. New York State Comptroller DiNapoli Statement on Martin Luther King Day

The Rev. Martin Luther King’s life mission was to bring equal opportunity for all people in employment, education and civic life. His dream was a country where every one of us would be judged by our actions and abilities, not the color of our skin.  In the decades since Dr. King’s tragic death in Memphis, we’ve made great advances toward racial equality in this country.

Today we honor the Rev. King’s memory, but acknowledge that more progress needs to be made. There remain some areas of society in which minorities and women lag in terms of wages and opportunities.
