Computer Operator Trainee

For appointment to a Computer Operator Trainee, you must have:

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma.
Computer Operator

For appointment to a Computer Operator, you must have:

  • High school or high school equivalency diploma and six months full-time experience in the operation of large scale/commercial printing equipment, a mainframe or medium to large server, multi-variable print production, or information technology related activities.

Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title, eligible under the 55 b/c program (see below), or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. 

Transfer:

For a 70.1 transfer to a Computer Operator, salary grade (SG)-10, you must have one year of permanent competitive service, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title allocated to an SG-8 or above.

Appointments via transfer must not result in a second, consecutive transfer with an advancement of more than two S-grades or one M-grade.

Traineeship salary information:

The position may be filled at the Computer Operator Trainee equated to SG-08 ($40,391 or full performance Computer Operator SG-10 ($45,081) based on the candidate’s education, experience, and previous state service. Salary is nonnegotiable. 

Candidates hired at the trainee level will be advanced to the full performance Computer Operator  SG-10 ($45,081) following successful completion of the traineeship.  

Duties

The position resides on the Computer Operations team, bureau of Operations Services.
  • This team is charged with monitoring critical hardware systems.
  • When issues arise, staff coordinate with technical teams and vendors to resolve.
  • The team also manages OSC’s enterprise printing, producing checks, direct deposit advices, tax documents, correspondence, and reports.
  • This includes weekly payroll checks and statements for NYS employees, monthly pension checks, W-2 and 1099 forms, business correspondence, and internal CIO reports. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy, both orally and in written format with peers, management, vendors, technical staff, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment, willing to take direction, as well as work independently.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain production requirements while ensuring quality control standards are continually maintained.
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Demonstrates reliability and dependability under varying shifts and conditions.
