New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli released the following statement on the New York City Mayor’s 2024 State of the City address:

“Public safety, affordability, and economic growth must guide future investments for New York, but the city is facing serious challenges, including unsustainable spending on the migrant crisis, growing housing costs and federal pandemic aid coming to an end.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, trustee of the New York State Common Retirement Fund (Fund), announced the filing of shareholder proposals at six portfolio companies requesting they comprehensively disclose their political spending. DiNapoli filed the disclosure proposals with Airbnb Inc., DoorDash Inc., Caesars Entertainment Inc., SoFi Technologies Inc., Charter Communications Inc., and DraftKings Inc.

New York state has the highest number of personal income tax (PIT) check-offs in the nation, but an analysis by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli found that even as the number of check-offs have grown over the last decade, only a fraction of the money has been actually spent on their target purposes each year.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to keep track of the gift cards they received during the holidays. Unused gift card balances can be turned over to the Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) after five years of inactivity. In 2023, the Office recovered over $27 million from gift cards. For this reason, everyone should check for unclaimed funds.

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced the appointment of former Dutchess County Comptroller Robin Lois as the Deputy Comptroller of Local Government & School Accountability.

Lois will head the division responsible for monitoring the finances of New York’s local governments and school districts. She will direct seven regional offices and a staff of more than 300 responsible for auditing and budget reviews, training local officials, monitoring local fiscal stress, and reporting on issues facing local governments and schools.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced a tentative schedule of planned bond sales for New York State, New York City and their major public authorities during the first quarter of 2024.

The planned sales of $4.36 billion include $3.11 billion of new money and $1.25 billion of refundings and reofferings as follows:

Housing costs in New York City and the surrounding suburbs have grown more than 68% over the last decade, the largest increase among selected major metropolitan areas in the U.S., according to a new report from New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Property tax levy growth for school districts and 10 of the state’s cities will be capped at 2%, the same as last year, according to data released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
