Twenty-three school districts statewide were designated in some level of fiscal stress under New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s Fiscal Stress Monitoring System for the school year (SY) ending on June 30, 2021, down from 31 school districts in fiscal stress the prior year.

“Governor Hochul introduced an executive budget proposal at a critical moment in our state’s history. As we continue our recovery we are faced with many challenges, but the proposed budget sets forth the Governor’s priorities to address them while also recognizing the importance of achieving and maintaining long-term structural budget balance.
Tax receipts for the first nine months of State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2021-22 continue to exceed projections, totaling $84.4 billion. This amount is significantly higher than the most recent forecast by the Division of the Budget contained in the Mid-Year Update to the Financial Plan. While tax collections have exceeded forecast throughout the current fiscal year, December results are also affected by a newly established tax structure, the Pass Through Entity Tax (PTET).
New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Cattaraugus County District Attorney Lori Pettit Rieman and the New York State Police announced the arrest of Terry Gaylor Jr., for allegedly stealing over $116,000 from the City of Olean Fire Department (COFD). Gaylor Jr., a former trustee and current firefighter with COFD, was arrested after a joint investigation by the Comptroller, District Attorney and State Police.

The planned sales of $6.91 billion include $6.28 billion of new money and $630 million of refundings and reofferings as follows:
The state’s prison population declined by half from March 2008 to March 2021, but the population of individuals aged 50 and above grew slightly, according to a follow-up report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. No age segment under the age of 50 showed an increase.
