DiNapoli Audit Finds Hazardous Conditions Persist in Mitchell-Lama Developments

New York State’s affordable housing agency, Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), is falling short in its oversight of several Mitchell-Lama developments, according to an audit released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Auditors found unsafe conditions at facilities that went unaddressed, sometimes for years, and questionable spending.

DiNapoli: Former Chatham Rescue Squad Business Manager Charged With Stealing Over $17k From Squad

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka, and the New York State Police today announced the indictment of former Chatham Rescue Squad Business Manager Sara Thorne, of Forest City, North Carolina, for allegedly stealing more than $17,000 from the rescue squad.

“Thorne allegedly abused her position to divert thousands of dollars meant to protect her community,” DiNapoli said. “Thanks to my ongoing partnership with District Attorney Czajka and the New York State Police, she is now brought to justice.”

State Comptroller DiNapoli, Senator Cooney and Assemblymember Solages Urge Governor to Sign Contract Legislation

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Senator Jeremy A. Cooney, and Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solages today urged Governor Kathy Hochul to sign legislation that passed both houses at the end of session enhancing transparency and accountability for state contracts awarded during a state of emergency, such as those that were not made transparent to the public during the COVID pandemic, as well as those contracts that are otherwise exempted from the Comptroller’s review.

DiNapoli Releases Bond Calendar for June and July

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced a tentative schedule for the planned bond sales for New York state, New York City and their major public authorities during the months of June and July of 2023.

The planned sales of $6.06 billion include $2.64 billion of new money and $3.42 billion of refundings and reofferings as follows:

Stronger-than-anticipated revenue and savings initiatives will allow New York City to maintain budget balance in the coming fiscal year, but the city faces significant financial pressures that are likely to exacerbate already large out-year budget gaps, according to a report on the city Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Executive Budget released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

DiNapoli: Thruway Authority Owed More Than $275 Million in Unpaid Tolls and Fees

The state’s Thruway Authority has to do a better job of identifying, billing, and collecting tolls and related fees, including $276.3 million it has a collection agency seeking as of March 2023, according to a new audit from State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

"This audit has identified ways in which the Thruway can improve its collection of tolls and fees,” DiNapoli said. “Based on the Authority’s response, I’m hopeful action will be taken to implement our recommendations to maximize revenue for the Thruway.”
