As of December 2024, 3.8 million individuals in New York received Social Security benefits totaling more than $7.2 billion for the month and approximately $84.2 billion for the calendar year. New York's share of the $1.47 trillion in benefits paid by the United States in 2024 was 5.7 percent.

Almost 81 percent of New York recipients were 65 or older. More than 3 million New Yorkers received retirement benefits and a little more than 422,000 received disability benefits. Retired worker beneficiaries in New York received a median monthly benefit of $1,958.94 and disabled beneficiaries a median monthly benefit of $1,504.70.

In December 2024, over $500 million in benefits were paid in each of the following counties: Suffolk ($681.3 million), Queens ($615.6 million), Nassau ($611.0 million), Kings ($570.5 million), and New York ($520.7 million). There were over 300,000 beneficiaries in each of three counties: Queens (375,290), Kings (365,705) and Suffolk (319,010).
