Some of your retired, former employees are still waiting for their pension benefit to be finalized. These retirees are currently receiving a monthly benefit since they retired years ago, but their benefit may not include all their earnings and service. To recalculate and finalize their pension benefit, NYSLRS needs additional information from employers. Therefore, you may receive:
- Salary Explanation requests for a former employee’s previously reported earnings, which require further explanation.
- LSV/SLV requests for your former employees' lump sum vacation days, lump sum vacation earnings, and unused, unpaid sick leave days.
Since your former employees are waiting for a new, recalculated pension benefit, it is important to act promptly each time you receive a request. Without your help, NYSLRS will have to recalculate their retirement benefit without final payment and service information, which may result in a reduced pension benefit amount for your retired employees.
The Benefits
- It’s quicker–it replaces the current time-consuming back and forth of emails between you and NYSLRS.
- We will be reducing the number of calls and complaints you receive from retirees awaiting their finalized benefit payment.
- Your prompt action ensures allowable payments are included in the calculation of your former employees’ pension benefits so they can receive every dollar they worked for and are entitled to.
Salary Explanation Requests
Payroll and Personnel contacts at your organization may receive notifications from Retirement Online directing them to submit a Salary Explanation page for one or more of your retired employees whose earnings require further explanation. Promptly complete and submit a Salary Explanation page for each employee you receive a notification for.
For more information, including a how-to guide and an interactive tutorial, visit the Salary Explanation page.
Deadline
Please submit all Salary Explanation requests by December 1, 2026. Without your help, NYSLRS will have to reevaluate the employee’s retirement benefit without this information, which may result in a reduced pension benefit amount for your retired employee.
LSV/SLV Requests
Individuals at your organization may receive emails from NYSLRS requesting they use the new, temporary LSV/SLV page in Retirement Online to verify the accuracy of lump sum vacation payment and sick leave accrual information for some of your former employees who have retired. Requests will only come in the form of an email from NYSLRS, not a Retirement Online notification.
Only some employers will need to use the new LSV/SLV page. You only need to use the page if you receive an email request from NYSLRS to do so. The sooner you submit the requested information, the sooner your retired employees can receive the full pension benefits they’ve earned.
Accessing the LSV/SLV Page
To access this page, you need to have one of the following security roles:
- Payroll
- Personnel
- Employer Reporting Submitter
- Employer Reporting Uploader
You may need to speak with your organization’s Contact Administrator/Security Administrator if you do not have these Contact Types/Security roles and you think you should.
Submitting Information to NYSLRS
On the LSV/SLV page, there are several ways you can identify which information NYSLRS is waiting for you to submit:
- The top of the page displays a count of the unsubmitted rows remaining.
- Use the Requested Date column to identify any new requests from NYSLRS since you last visited the page.
- The rows you already submitted will become read-only and sort to the bottom of the LSV/SLV table.
For step-by-step instructions, refer to the LSV/SLV Page How-To Guide.
Deadline
Please submit all LSV/SLV information by the deadline indicated in your email. After the deadline, NYSLRS will create an Accrued Payments and Leave Credits page for each outstanding person and employment instance. Once these pages are created, you will receive Retirement Online notifications with requests to complete them.
Submit Promptly, Save Time
Completing the LSV/SLV page is simpler and more convenient. It lists all of your retired, former employees that NYSLRS needs information for in one place. It only requires you to verify lump sum vacation payments and unused, unpaid sick leave accruals.
The Accrued Payments and Leave Credits page requires one page per employee and collects much more granular information. Therefore, it will result in more work than if you complete and submit the information requested on the LSV/SLV page by the deadline.
Without your help, NYSLRS will have to reevaluate the employee’s retirement benefit without this information, which may result in a reduced pension benefit amount for your retired employee.
