IMPORTANT: Electing coverage under Section 383-e or 383-f is irrevocable and will apply to all subsequent employment in any plan-eligible title. Additionally, changing your retirement plan may not be beneficial to all eligible members.
Before submitting an election form, we strongly recommend you speak with a NYSLRS representative to discuss the impact of changing your retirement plan on your membership. Call 866-805-0990 (press 2, then follow the prompts).
It is especially important to speak to a representative about your specific situation, before electing one of these plans, if you are:
- Planning to retire in the near future.
- Considering transferring or reinstating a previous retirement system membership.
There are differences in your current and the new plans that you will want to consider. For example:
- Contribution rates are higher in these plans.
- In your existing retirement plan, for each year of service beyond 25 years, including ERS service, you receive an additional 1.66 percent of your Final Average Earnings (FAE), up to a maximum of seven years. These plans do not allow for crediting of “other than” service, which ERS service and any service not listed as creditable above would be classified as.
What is the deadline to elect one of these plans?
For members who were already in an eligible title as of July 1, 2025, the deadline to elect is June 30, 2026.
For members who transfer or are promoted into an eligible title, the deadline to elect is within one year of the start date of your employment in an eligible title.
New members employed in an eligible title who join PFRS on or after July 1, 2025 will be automatically enrolled in the new 20-year plan (Section 383-e).
How do I elect one of these plans?
Complete and submit the Election Form for Section 383-e or 383-f Retirement Plan (PF5549). To request the form, call 866-805-0990 (press 2, then follow the prompts) or send a message using our secure contact form.
Your election will be effective as of the date we receive your properly signed and notarized form. If you mail it by “Certified Mail—Return Receipt Requested,” we will consider it as having been filed on the date it was mailed.
