Electing coverage under Section 383-e or 383-f is irrevocable and will apply to all subsequent employment in any plan-eligible title. Additionally, changing your retirement plan may not be beneficial to all eligible members. There are some differences between the benefits in the existing En-Con Police Officers, Forest Rangers, Regional State Park Police and State University Police plans and the new 20- and 25-Year (Section 383-e and 383-f) plans, which you will want to consider.
Before submitting an election form, we recommend speaking with a NYSLRS representative (call 866-805-0990, press 2, then follow the prompts) to discuss your specific situation and review your benefits. It’s especially important to speak with a representative if you are:
- Planning to retire in the near future.
- Considering transferring your membership from another retirement system or reinstating a previous membership.
Eligibility to Elect Coverage
You must be actively employed in one of the titles covered by these plans as of the date the election form is received by NYSLRS.
How to Elect Coverage
Complete and submit the Election Form for Section 383-e or 383-f Retirement Plan (PF5549). To request the form, call 866-805-0990 (press 2, then follow the prompts) or send a message using our secure contact form.
Your election will be effective as of the date we receive your properly signed and notarized form. If you mail it by “Certified Mail—Return Receipt Requested,” we will consider it filed on the date it was mailed.
Deadlines to Elect Coverage
If you were in an eligible title as of July 1, 2025, the deadline to elect is December 31, 2026.
If you transferred or were promoted into an eligible title on or after July 1, 2025, the deadline to elect is December 31, 2026 or within one year of the start of your employment, whichever is later.
Note: New Tier 6 members with a date of membership on or after July 1, 2025 employed in a title covered by these plans are automatically enrolled in the new 20-Year (Section 383-e) Plan.
