Location Pay

Location pay is additional compensation paid to an employee whose principal place of employment or official station is located in New York City or the counties of Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester. It was eliminated on April 1, 1985 for Monroe County, but remains payable to those employees who were incumbents and receiving the $200 Monroe County location pay on that date.

This compensation is an amount established by law and is in addition to, and not part of, the employee’s basic annual salary and does not affect other provisions of the laws concerning salary determinations.

Part-time and seasonal employees are not eligible for Location Pay*. However, full-time eligible employees on an authorized leave with part-time salary and employees on VRWS continue to receive this compensation on a pro-rated basis.

*Certain PEF, CSEA and MC Seasonal employees may be eligible for a Location Pay lump sum payment. Refer to payroll bulletins 829 for PEF, 817 for CSEA and 1179 for MC for more information.

Location pay must be discontinued if the employee is reassigned to an area for which Location Pay is not authorized. It is also discontinued for Monroe County employees who interrupt the continuous eligibility requirement by permanent separation or interim appointment to a position or area in which they are no longer entitled to location pay (e.g. appointment to part-time position or transfer outside of Monroe County); such employees may not subsequently resume receipt of location pay should they return to their formerly eligible status/position. There is an exception for an eligible employee who became part-time due to participation in an employer sponsored summer program; effective April 1, 1988, such employee may re-establish eligibility to receive Location Pay when they return to full-time employment.

The following State officers and employees are not eligible for Location Pay:

  1. Officers and employees of the Legislature;
  2. The Governor, Lt. Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General, and Commissioners and other officers whose salary is set by Section 169 of the Executive Law;
  3. Employees in the professional service in the State University or in institutions under the management of Cornell or Alfred Universities;
  4. Judges and Justices in the Judiciary;
  5. Superintendents of Correctional Facility
